Vijay Nair, former CEO of event management company ‘Only Much Louder’ on Tuesday was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Delhi Excise Policy Case. Throughout the years, he was closely associated with the top brass of the Aam Aadmi Party. The arrest was condemned by AAP as they claimed Vijay was arrested as he refused to name Delhi Dy CM Manish Sisodia.
Vijay Nair’s name was found mentioned in the FIR by CBI which had Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia as the accused number one.
Who is Vijay Nair?
Vijay Nair — the name clearly stood out from 14 other accused, when the FIR was shared by the CBI. For a long, known as a backstage manager, he soon was established as a game changer in the indie music industry.
Dropping out of a Commerce Bachelor’s programme at a Mumbai college, he found OML in 2002. The company focused on organising live music events, comedy shows and artist management.
According to The Print, “The company became known for conceptualising major events, like the NH7 Weekender, which went on to become the biggest live indie music festival in the country”.
He was best known for managing shows of AIB, the infamous and controversial comedy group. Till 2014, OML reported a net worth of an estimated US$ 10 million.
It was during this period, he came in contact with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Vijay Nair and AAP
According to several sources, Vijay Nair was breaking bread with top AAP leaders in 2018 despite much lesser knowledge of the same in mainstream media.
Initially, the ex-CEO of OML was just a volunteer for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) like many others from different fields of interest. He started by organising fundraising events for the AAP as many top artists were at his disposal.
The thumping victory for AAP in the 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections strengthened the relations between Nair and the party.
According to a report in 2019, the then AAP spokesperson Atishi Marlena claimed that Vijay Nair was a part-time volunteer in the party and “does ad-hoc work in social media and organising party events”.
According to reports, Vijay Nair was deeply involved in the party’s media management — leading up to the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. He had dominantly established himself in the ‘inner circle’ even though the party convincingly lost the Lok Sabha Elections.
His tactics and management showed their effect as AAP clinched victory in the 2020 Delhi Assembly Elections. Since then, Vijay Nair has been reportedly been the mastermind behind AAP’s digital communication strategy. The former OML CEO enjoys much freedom in AAP despite holding no official post.
The CBI today (28 September, 2022) made another arrest in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy Case. Sameer Mahendru, the owner of the Indospirit group and co-accused in the FIR by CBI was arrested.
The trail has caught up with Vijay Nair and other accused. The tensions will now only escalate further as the CBI digs deeper.
