The members of the Odisha Government Contractual Employees Association (OGCEA) on Sunday, 11th September, staged a massive protest outside the Lok Seva Bhavan (Secretariat) in Bhubaneswar.
The agitating members of the OGCEA are staging protests against the contractual appointment rule of the Naveen Patnaik government. Staging protests at the Lower PMG Square ‘Dharna Sthal’, the agitating members asserted that the state government should abolish with the contractual appointment system in the state government offices.
The protesters alleged that they have to go through rigorous studies and clear exams conducted by the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) only to get an appointment for a period of 6 years and then their service terminates, as per the contractual appointment system. They also alleged that they are being paid a meagre salary against their full-time counterparts in the same department. The contractual employees are also denied DA, HRA and other benefits which their counterparts are enjoying.
The protestors demanded that the government should implement Equal Pay for Equal Work for all Government employees. They also demanded the implementation of uniform service rules for all government employees.
A heavy police force was deployed outside Lok Seva Bhavan to maintain law and order. The protesters alleged that they have been protesting for the last 25 days and had given Sept 10 deadline to the state government but to avail. This has forced us to take out Bhubaneswar Chalo’ campaign today.
An agitating worker said, “The rights and demands of all of us have been suppressed for many years. No right is won without a struggle. We have to fight tooth and nail. We cannot stop till the rules are gone”.
