Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has backed the demand for a separate Eastern Nagaland state.
Addressing a function at Kohima, Nagaland Chief Minister said he fully backs the demand of the people of eastern Nagaland for a separate state. “It’s not wrong to demand Eastern Nagaland as a separate state”, he said.
Nagaland is one of India’s smallest states, situated in the northeastern region of the country. Eastern Nagaland comprises six districts Mon, Tuesnsang, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak, and Shamantor, which are homes to the seven Naga tribes of Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Tikhir and Yimkhiung.
“Nagas in the Eastern part are asking for their separate state, which is their long-pending demand, and this issue must be resolved”, says, CM Rio.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) have asked 20 legislators from the eastern part of the state to resign. They have also asked them not to participate in the Hornbill festival if their demand is not fulfilled.
Rio further said that whenever the Union Home Minister visits the ENPO, the concerns of the people of Eastern Nagaland will be forwarded to him to resolve the issue.
It is noteworthy that the government has been continuously ignoring the concerns of the people of the eastern part of the state even after 58 years of Nagaland Statehood. The residents of the eastern part of Nagaland have even passed a resolution to boycott all political meetings in the coming elections.
