Europe’s Italy is heading towards the far-right government as voters have rewarded the Brothers of Italy, a neo-fascist party overwhelmingly. The Brothers of Italy’s success also comes with the country electing its first woman premier in Giorgia Meloni.
This is for the first time that Italy had elected a far-right-led government in its post-World War II history. The Right-wing alliance to which ‘The Brothers of Italy’ belongs trounced its nearest rivals, a center-left coalition, by more than 18 percentage points.
“I am a woman, I am a mother, I am Italian, I am a Christian and you will not take that away from me.” These have been the favorite words of Giorgia Meloni in all her election rallies and the votes have responded to it in a big way. The Voters in Italy have warmly responded to Meloni’s words.
The forty five year leader, who keeps little political experience as far as governance is concerned, comes from a party that traces its origins to the postwar, neo-fascist Italian Social Movement. Meloni started her career in politics in the nineties as a far-right activist. Her style of campaigning is still marked by fiery attacks on the European Union, LGBTQ groups, and immigrants in particular.
However, Giorgia Meloni faces a big challenge coming her way soon after assuming office in the form of an energy crisis affecting Italy and entire Europe in the backdrop of Russia Ukraine war.
With Italy electing a far-right government is bound to have repercussions in entire Europe. The third largest economy in entire Europe, Italy is also revered to the followers of Christianity and the election of a right-wing party here is being looked at with much interest in the entire world.
It is interesting to note that while European think tank often criticise India on issues of the far right, an election of a right-leaning government in Italy is rather being looked at with a matter of applause in the continent.
