In a significant political development in Afghanistan, a new political party named as the National Movement of Peace and Justice (NMPJ) was formed on 15th October 2022.
The newly formed political group is led by former Foreign Minister(at the time of the Afghan republic) Muhammad Hanif Atmar who virtually addressed the first session of the group. It also includes former intelligence chief Masoom Stanekzai, as one of its founding members.
Hanif Atmar and Masoom Stanekzai were important political figures in Afghanistan during the previous Afghan government.
The political group is formed with an aim to have an inclusive democratic government in Afghanistan. The group also called for an intra-Afghan dialogue so as to have a legitimate government in Kabul.
Hanif Atmar during the virtual meeting of the group termed the Taliban government as ‘illegitimate’ and a ‘barrier’ in the peace process in Afghanistan. He further said that peace can only be achieved only after a legitimate government is formed at the centre.
Hanif Atmar further said that the Doha Peace Agreement was the beginning of the downfall of the erstwhile Afghan Republic and that the provisions of the agreement were not fulfilled by the concerned parties.
As per the former foreign minister, “The only provision of the Doha agreement which was implemented was the withdrawal of foreign forces.” He criticized the Taliban regime for not adhering to an intra-Afghan dialogue as per the Doha agreement. He further called on the Taliban to hold intra-Afghan talks so as to reach an “inclusive political agreement.”
Hanif Atmar also urged the international organization to assist in the process of holding an intra-Afghan dialogue which would bring peace and stability to the war-torn country.
