As the Durand line remains a contentious issue between Pakistan and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, yet again a clash took place between the forces of the two countries resulting in grievous injuries to a woman on the Afghan side.

The incident took place today (20th October 2022) in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar after both sides were involved in a border skirmish which the Taliban security forces say was initiated by the Pakistani side.

Afghan news daily TOLO news also confirmed the clashes between Pakistan and Taliban security forces.

The police chief of Kandahar’s Spin district Malawi Mahmood said the Pakistani soldiers fired at the posts of Islamic Emirate in this district and after the retaliatory fire, Pakistani soldiers threw mortars on Afghan soil, resulting in injuries to a woman.

As per locals, the clash started when the Taliban security forces tried to break the border fence which has been installed by Pakistan all along the Durand line to prevent the ingress of terrorists and illegal immigrants from the Afghan side.

Tension remains high along the border between Pakistan and the Taliban. The Taliban views the installation of barbed fencing along the Durand line as illegal as both sides often get involved in low-level clashes.

Earlier in August 2022, the Taliban’s security forces and Pakistani military clashed on Durand Line in the Dangam district of eastern Kunar province in which both sides used light as well as heavy weapons.

Afghans do not consider the Durand line as a legitimate border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This stand has been maintained by all regimes of Afghanistan including the Taliban and the earlier US-backed republic governments.

Pakistan had from the time of its existence made every effort to legitimize the British-era Durand line as a legitimate border between both countries. But its endeavors have met with failure every time.

Hence such skirmishes in the border areas will continue unless a legal agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan to clearly demarcate the border is signed.
