The Forthcoming Assembly Elections in Gujarat are significant for Aam Aadmi Party and its convenor Arvind Kejriwal. AAP’s aggressive election campaigning is a testimony to the state’s importance in the electoral politics of India. However, a chunk of that campaigning is probably being funded by Punjab.
According to our investigation, Punjab Govt has spent more than 1 crore in social media advertisements for Aam Aadmi Party in Gujarat Elections.
Punjab Govt Spending on Facebook Ads
A Twitter user had posted about the Punjab govt. spending “₹1.74 crores on advertisements out of which ₹1.4 crores were spent in Gujarat only (On Single Facebook page)”.
We decided to verify the above claim with the Meta Ad Library.
For the unaware readers, “The Ad Library provides advertising transparency by offering a comprehensive, searchable collection of all ads currently running from across Meta technologies”.
As we searched for the Punjab Government, we found that a sum of ₹1.7 crore has been spent on Facebook advertisements. The advertisements were for the period from 24 Sept-23 October 2022.
As we dug further, we found out that ₹1.4 crore were spent in advertisements for the audience in Gujarat. It is more than 75% of the total money spent on Facebook ads by Punjab Government.
Ironically, Punjab Government is spending even more than the Gujarat AAP unit on a Facebook ad campaign. Bhagwant Maan has been criticised before for high expenditure for Gujarat Elections.
Punjab has an AAP-led government at its helm, with Bhagwant Maan as the Chief Minister. It’s highly immoral for the Maan government to spend money on another state’s elections from Punjab’s exchequer.
The extravagant social media spending by the Punjab Govt for Gujarat Elections seems highly inappropriate when the state is under a debt of ₹2.63 lakh crore.
