The Joe Biden-led American administration released its National Security Strategy (NSS) document on October 12th. The document envisages cooperation with like-minded states including India to combat climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, deepen cybersecurity partnerships, and promote infrastructure and health security.
What is the National Security Strategy ?
The National Security Strategy document is an annual report submitted by the President of the US to Congress that describes the national security goals and strategies of the United States. The report is prepared by the National Security Council (NSC) which examines the National security policies of the US and features proposals for the use of economic, political, and military powers to promote its interests. The report was delayed following the Russia-Ukraine war.
Implications on India
The NSS document has thoroughly mentioned US relations with India as a part of the Indo-pacific region. It called out India to be the world’s largest democracy and its major defense partner. To maintain bilateral and multilateral relations, the US plans to work together with India to support the former’s vision of an open and free Indo-pacific region. On the other hand, the document has not even once mentioned Pakistan.
The US perceives India to have a similar mindset as its own, thus it has emphasized creating ‘strong, resilient, and mutually reinforcing relationships’ that will prove the importance of democracy and how it can deliver for its people and the world. India as a part of the international groupings of QUAD (Australia, Japan, India, United States) and I2-U2 (India, Israel, UAE, United States) has been focused upon.
The document also underlined the importance of the ‘revitalized’ QUAD that has brought the US closer to members of the grouping to deal with the regional challenges and deliver results for the Indo-pacific region.
The US security strategy document has emphasized cooperating with the Indo-pacific region. This will ensure the strengthening of the relations between the US and India amidst the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, which has heavily impacted geopolitical relations around the world.
